Our morning started with a visit to Ruben Dario Metodista Iglesia near our home at El Ayudante. The simple concrete church was filled with children who were very receptive to their visitors from Alabama. Many enjoyed hugs and having their pictures taken. Pastor Juan Carlos introduced our team leader Glenn Glover. Glenn greeted the congregation and introduced all team members. An interpreter helped us understand parts of the service, and we enjoyed the energy of the prayers and songs although we didn't understand the language.
After church the ants conducted Sunday school for 120 children. Gale Walker, who read our story about the ants, was assisted by our amiable and able interpreter Pablo. The children were enthusiastic as they were introduced to various ants, including the queen ant, the sugar ant, and our wild and crazy ant Lisa. The children, who ranged in age from preschool through elementary school, were very well-behaved, and they were lively participants in the Spanish version of the hokey pokey. They weren't as successful with playing the comb, but the mission team wasn't too great at it either. At the end of the class each child received a red tote with the Proverbs scripture and several gifts from the team.
El Ayudante has a child protection center that cares for 30 children. In the afternoon some of the mission team accompanied some of the children into downtown Leon for treats. We enjoyed visiting with the children and being in air conditioning.entry by Betty Corbin
